Southwark Council appointed us to retro fit BS9251 fire sprinklers into their sheltered housing properties as part of a scheme to protect elderly and vulnerable residents in Southwark. This amounted to over 20 buildings and will shortly be completed.
Hughes House was one such building, which consisted of 32 apartments over 2 floors. At about 15: 15 hours on Thursday 1st September 2016 a fire occurred on the cooker in the flat of an 82 year old resident. One sprinkler head activated to extinguish the fire. LFB also report that there were some issues with hoarding within the flat.
This was all the more extraordinary as the system was not fully commissioned at the time of the fire. The occupier was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
There was very little damage and our engineers attended site within a few hours to reinstate the system to full operational use.
London Fire Brigade report that due to the excellent signage within in the block, the attending crews were able to quickly locate the stop valve and isolate the water supply to the sprinkler head.
